Gibson 36 Boat Transport
Pools and Locks on the Mississippi River
The Upper Mississippi River has a series of pools that are created by a system of 29 locks & dams, which are operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. A little background history on them is that Congress authorized them in the 1930’s, and by 1940, the majority of them were completed. The primary reason for damming the river was to facilitate barge transportation. In addition to this, pleasure crafts and towboats also utilize this system to navigate parts of the river that were once too shallow for boats to travel over. These dams regulate the water levels for both the Upper Mississippi and the Lower Mississippi River.
